Definition (English)
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation to another word in a sentence. (Preposition হলো এমন শব্দ যা বিশেষ্য বা সর্বনামের আগে বসে বাক্যের অন্য শব্দের সাথে সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে।)
A preposition shows relation of time, place, direction, cause, manner, etc. (Preposition সময়, স্থান, দিক, কারণ, প্রকার ইত্যাদির সম্পর্ক বোঝায়।)
Examples:
The book is on the table. (বইটি টেবিলের উপর আছে।)
He lives in Dhaka. (সে ঢাকায় থাকে।)
She went to school. (সে স্কুলে গেছে।)
Types of Preposition (পদান্বয়ী অব্যয়ের প্রকারভেদ)
1. Preposition of Time (সময়বাচক Preposition)
A preposition of time shows time relation. (Time preposition সময়ের সম্পর্ক বোঝায়।)
Examples:
He was born in 2005. (সে ২০০৫ সালে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছে।)
She will come at 5 pm. (সে বিকেল ৫টায় আসবে।)
We do not work on Friday. (আমরা শুক্রবারে কাজ করি না।)
2. Preposition of Place (স্থানবাচক Preposition)
A preposition of place shows place or position. (Place preposition স্থান বা অবস্থান বোঝায়।)
Examples:
The cat is under the table. (বিড়ালটি টেবিলের নিচে আছে।)
She is standing beside me. (সে আমার পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে।)
3. Preposition of Direction or Movement (দিক বা গমনবাচক Preposition)
A preposition of direction shows movement towards a place. (Direction preposition কোনো স্থানের দিকে গমন বোঝায়।)
Examples:
He is going to market. (সে বাজারে যাচ্ছে।)
She walked into the room. (সে ঘরের ভিতরে হেঁটে ঢুকল।)
4. Preposition of Cause or Reason (কারণবাচক Preposition)
A preposition of cause shows reason. (Cause preposition কারণ বোঝায়।)
Examples:
He died of fever. (সে জ্বরে মারা গেছে।)
She is tired from work. (সে কাজের কারণে ক্লান্ত।)
5. Preposition of Agent or Instrument (কর্তা বা উপকরণবাচক Preposition)
A preposition of agent or instrument shows doer or means. (Agent বা instrument preposition কর্তা বা উপায় বোঝায়।)
Examples:
The letter was written by Rahim. (চিঠিটি রহিম দ্বারা লেখা হয়েছে।)
He cut the paper with a knife. (সে ছুরি দিয়ে কাগজ কাটল।)
Forms of Preposition (Preposition-এর গঠন)
1. Simple Preposition (সরল Preposition)
Simple prepositions consist of one word. (Simple preposition একটি শব্দ নিয়ে গঠিত।)
Examples:
in, on, at, by, with (in, on, at, by, with)
2. Compound Preposition (যৌগিক Preposition)
Compound prepositions are formed by adding a prefix to a noun or adjective. (Compound preposition উপসর্গ যোগ করে গঠিত হয়।)
Examples:
across, before, behind, inside (across, before, behind, inside)
3. Phrase Preposition (পদবন্ধ Preposition)
Phrase prepositions consist of more than one word. (Phrase preposition একাধিক শব্দ নিয়ে গঠিত।)
Examples:
in front of (সামনে), because of (কারণে), in spite of (সত্ত্বেও), due to (কারণে)
He stood in front of the gate. (সে গেটের সামনে দাঁড়িয়েছিল।)
She succeeded in spite of difficulties. (সে কষ্ট সত্ত্বেও সফল হয়েছে।)
