Definition (English)
A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases, or clauses. (Conjunction হলো এমন শব্দ যা শব্দ, পদবন্ধ বা clause যুক্ত করে।)
A conjunction connects similar or related ideas in a sentence. (Conjunction বাক্যে সমজাতীয় বা সম্পর্কিত ভাব যুক্ত করে।)
Examples:
She reads and writes. (সে পড়ে এবং লেখে।)
He was tired but he worked hard. (সে ক্লান্ত ছিল কিন্তু সে কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেছে।)
I stayed at home because it was raining. (আমি বাসায় ছিলাম কারণ বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।)
Types of Conjunction (সমুচ্চয়ী অব্যয়ের প্রকারভেদ)
1. Coordinating Conjunction (সমন্বয়ী অব্যয়)
A coordinating conjunction joins words, phrases, or independent clauses of equal importance. (Coordinating conjunction সমমানের শব্দ, পদবন্ধ বা স্বাধীন clause যুক্ত করে।)
The common coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS). (প্রচলিত coordinating conjunction হলো: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so।)
Examples:
She reads and writes. (সে পড়ে এবং লেখে।)
He tried hard but he failed. (সে কঠোর চেষ্টা করেছিল কিন্তু সে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।)
Work hard or you will fail. (কঠোর পরিশ্রম করো নতুবা তুমি ব্যর্থ হবে।)
2. Subordinating Conjunction (অধীনস্থ অব্যয়)
A subordinating conjunction joins a subordinate clause to a main clause. (Subordinating conjunction একটি অধীন clause-কে প্রধান clause-এর সাথে যুক্ত করে।)
Common subordinating conjunctions are: because, although, since, if, when, while, before, after, etc. (প্রচলিত subordinating conjunction হলো: because, although, since, if, when, while, before, after ইত্যাদি।)
Examples:
I stayed at home because it was raining. (আমি বাসায় ছিলাম কারণ বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।)
Although he is poor, he is honest. (সে দরিদ্র হলেও সে সৎ।)
If you work hard, you will succeed. (তুমি যদি কঠোর পরিশ্রম করো, তুমি সফল হবে।)
3. Correlative Conjunction (যুগ্ম অব্যয়)
Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to join equal elements. (Correlative conjunction জোড়ায় জোড়ায় ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং সমমানের অংশ যুক্ত করে।)
Common pairs are: either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also, whether…or. (প্রচলিত যুগ্ম অব্যয় হলো: either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also, whether…or।)
Examples:
Either you or he is responsible. (তুমি অথবা সে দায়ী।)
Both Rahim and Karim are present. (রহিম এবং করিম উভয়ই উপস্থিত।)
She is not only intelligent but also hardworking. (সে শুধু মেধাবী নয় বরং পরিশ্রমীও।)
