Definition (English)
An article is a word placed before a noun to define or limit it. (Article হলো এমন শব্দ যা বিশেষ্যের আগে বসে তাকে নির্দিষ্ট বা অনির্দিষ্ট করে।)
There are two types of articles in English: Indefinite and Definite. (ইংরেজিতে Article দুই প্রকার: Indefinite এবং Definite।)
Types of Article (Article-এর প্রকারভেদ)
1. Indefinite Article (অনির্দিষ্ট Article)
The indefinite articles are “a” and “an”. (Indefinite article হলো “a” এবং “an”।)
They are used before singular countable nouns. (এগুলো একবচন গণনীয় বিশেষ্যের আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)
Use of “a” (a-এর ব্যবহার)
“A” is used before a word beginning with a consonant sound. (“a” ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে বসে।)
Examples:
She has a pen. (তার একটি কলম আছে।)
He is a boy. (সে একজন ছেলে।)
It is a university. (এটি একটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়।)
Use of “an” (an-এর ব্যবহার)
“An” is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound. (“an” স্বরধ্বনি দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে বসে।)
Examples:
He is an honest man. (সে একজন সৎ মানুষ।)
She ate an apple. (সে একটি আপেল খেয়েছে।)
He is an MBA student. (সে একজন এমবিএ ছাত্র।)
2. Definite Article (নির্দিষ্ট Article)
The definite article is “the”. (Definite article হলো “the”।)
“The” is used before a specific or previously mentioned noun. (“The” নির্দিষ্ট বা পূর্বে উল্লেখিত বিশেষ্যের আগে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)
Examples:
The sun rises in the east. (সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে উদয় হয়।)
The book on the table is mine. (টেবিলের উপর থাকা বইটি আমার।)
Important Rules of Article (Article-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম)
Rule 1: Use of “the” with Unique Things (একক বস্তুর আগে “the”)
We use “the” before unique things. (একক বা অনন্য বস্তুর আগে “the” বসে।)
Examples:
The moon (চাঁদ)
The earth (পৃথিবী)
Rule 2: Use of “the” with Rivers, Seas, Oceans, Mountain Ranges (নদী, সমুদ্র, মহাসাগর, পর্বতমালার আগে “the”)
Examples:
The Padma (পদ্মা)
The Bay of Bengal (বঙ্গোপসাগর)
The Himalayas (হিমালয়)
Rule 3: No Article before Proper Noun (Proper Noun-এর আগে Article বসে না)
We usually do not use article before proper nouns. (Proper noun-এর আগে সাধারণত article বসে না।)
Example:
Rahim is my friend. (রহিম আমার বন্ধু।)
Rule 4: Use of Article with Ordinal and Superlative (ক্রমবাচক ও অতিশয় রূপের আগে “the”)
We use “the” before ordinal numbers and superlative adjectives. (ক্রমবাচক সংখ্যা ও superlative adjective-এর আগে “the” বসে।)
Examples:
He was the first boy. (সে প্রথম ছেলে ছিল।)
She is the best student. (সে সেরা ছাত্রী।)
Rule 5: Omission of Article (Article বর্জন)
We do not use article before abstract nouns used in general sense. (সাধারণ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত abstract noun-এর আগে article বসে না।)
Examples:
Honesty is the best policy. (সততা সর্বোত্তম নীতি।)
Knowledge is power. (জ্ঞান শক্তি।)
